A Colorado Springs Mom’s Guide to the Month of February 2017

We are so thankful to The Promenade Shops at Briargate for bringing you this Mom's Guide to the month of February.

Winter is upon us! Are you tired of the cold and snow already? We have created this guide to help you combat the cabin fever. There is always something going on in Colorado Springs and we want to keep you in the know! Events are organized by date to help you find what you are interested in quickly.

February 1: Kids Craft With Pike’s Peak Children’s Museum | 4-5pm (New Center Point Location) Join the Pike’s Peak Children’s Museum for an hour of crafting at Whole Foods Market! FREE

February 2: Nature Adventures Class @ Fountain Creek Nature Center | 10-11:30am This class is for 3-6 year olds. Typical class includes short hike and activities around a theme. This month’s theme is Snazzy Snowflakes. $3 per person (including siblings and parents). REGISTRATION REQUIRED. 

February 3: Winter Night Sky For Beginners  | 7pm Join Professor Moonbeam to learn the patterns and locations of stars, and other night sky objects during an indoor presentation. Afterward, we’ll go outside to gaze through the telescopes of the Colorado Springs Astronomical Society to locate winter sky stars and constellations. Dress warmly. $4/member, $5/non-member.

February 4: PPLD Programs for Kids: Mini Masterminds Crossbeams(STEAM workshop) | 9:30-11am Meet an engineer and team-build an incredible Crossbeams project! Join Mini Masterminds on the first Saturday of most months and STEAM ahead of the crowd! Kids 6-12 years old, stretch your noggin and increase your processing power in science, technology, engineering, art, or math! Make a reservation for you and a friend for this free workshop! REGISTRATION REQUIRED

February 4: Michael’s Kids Club | 10am-12pm They make a Valentine Treat Bag, you shop! $2 per child

February 1-14: The Promenade Shops at Briargate | The February #LoveLife contest is pretty simple. Contestants can upload a photo to @shopsbriargate Instagram with #lovelife and tell us what they love about life. Winner will be randomly selected to win a $100 Anthropologie gift card. What’s not to love about that? February 7: Space Story [email protected] Foundation Discovery Center | 10:30-11:30am Designed to spark an interest in STEM in young learners. Appropriate for ages 2-5. From their site:  “Way up in the Rolie Polie Sky is a little round planet of a really swell guy. Come create and explore fun Rolie Polie robots and planets! There will be plenty of Polie treats, crafts and activities for all to enjoy.” Cost included with price of admission to Discovery Center.

February 9: Twos and Threes [email protected] Creek Nature Center | 10-11:15am This class is for 2-3 year olds. Typical class includes short hike and activities around a theme. This month’s theme is Animals at Night. $3 per person(including siblings and parents). REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

February 9: Kids Craft With Pike’s Peak Children’s Museum | 10-11am (Academy Location) Join the Pike’s Peak Children’s Museum for an hour of crafting at Whole Foods Market! FREE

 

February 11: Michael’s Kids Club | 10am-12pm They make Valentine’s Day Cookies, you shop! $2 per child

February 11: 12th Annual Bighorn Sheep Day | 10am-3pm Join us for the 12th Annual Bighorn Sheep Day. Look for bighorns in their natural habitat through our high-power telescopes. Bighorn presentations and door prizes. Free cookies and cider. Guided nature walks. Children’s activities and crafts. Live Zoo animals. No-charge – all activities are FREE! Don’t forget your binoculars. It’s a full day of free family fun! Activities (schedule subject to change)
Guided Nature Walks in the Park– meet at the Perkins Central Garden Trail Head 10 am, 11 am, Noon, 1 pm & 2 pm, Wildlife Viewing Stations on the Visitor Center Terrace or Take the Free Shuttle to Offsite Viewing Area at the Mesa R, Youth Crafts, Presentations in the Visitor Center Theater (lots of Door Prizes!)
10:30 am: Youth Wildlife Game
11:45 am: Wildlife & Disasters
1:00 pm: Zooper Heroes – see the amazing powers of some of our animal friends from Cheyenne Mountain Zoo
2:15 pm: Bighorn Biology, followed by radio collar scavenger hunt. FREE

February 15: Children’s History Hour-The Olympic Dream | 10:30am It’s never too soon to dream big! This month we’ll learn why Colorado Springs is known as Olympic City USA. We’ll explore the stories of basketball player Michael Jordan and local runner Dolphus Stroud and learn about their journeys toward competing in the Olympics. Make your own Olympic games bracelet and olive leaf crown. $2 suggested donation, free for museum members. For ages 2-6. REGISTRATION REQUIRED. 

February 15: Nature Explorer’s Class | 10-11:30am This class is for 4-5 year olds. Typical class includes short hike and activities around a theme. This month’s theme is A Bug’s Life in Winter. $3 per person (including siblings and parents). REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

February 17: Fine Arts Center Free Day | 10am – 7:30pm Museum Free Days are just that, an opportunity for the public to enjoy our galleries free of charge with artist demonstrations from 10am to 2pm in the Smith Family Gallery. This event is recurring on the third Friday of each month! If you go, make sure to check out the tactile gallery where kids are free to touch the art on display.  FREE

February 18: Countdown to Kindergarten Carnival | 10am – 12pm Come try lots of fun activities that will help you explore all the ways to get ready for Kindergarten! Free book, free snacks and lots of fun activities. This activity is designed for children 5 and under and their parents. 

February 18: Michael’s Kids Club | 10am-12pm They make a Potted Cactus, you shop! $2 per child

 

February 22: Little Wonders Class @ Bear Creek Nature Center  | 10-11:15am This class is for 2-3 year olds.  Typical class includes short hike and activities around a theme. This month’s theme is Sense-Sa-Tional. $3 per person (including siblings and parents) REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

City Rock CLIMBarium Open Gym | Monday-Friday from 11am-1pm This open gym time is for children 5 and under. $6 per child (18 months and under free with paid sibling). 21 N Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs

Music and Movement for Two and Three Year Olds | Mondays 10-10:30am (Rockrimmon Library), Tuesdays 10:30-11am (Cheyenne Mountain Library), Wednesdays 9:30-10am, 10:15-10:45am, 11-11:30am (Library 21c), Fridays 10:30-11am (Penrose Library & Ruth Holley Library) Shake those wiggles out and have some fun! This 30-minute program consists of music and movement activities and a story. For two and three-year-old children, with a favorite adult. Due to high attendance, certain branches issue a token to the first 20 FAMILIES, on a first come, first served basis. FREE

Cripple Creek Ice Festival | February 11-February 19 | Time and Cost Varies The Cripple Creek Ice Festival features numerous fun events to enjoy throughout the two event weekends. Interactive sculptures are available for event attendees to climb on and to have a Kodak moment. Several sculptures are made just for kids, with a fun ice slide, an ice maze, and carnival-type games that are all made of ice. Street vendors have just the perfect thing to bring home as a memento of your visit here, and an ice bar with a liquor luge ensures you always have a refreshing beverage to enjoy. There will be additional FREE parking at the Heritage Center northeast of town on Highway 67, and the shuttle service to the event will be FREE on Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm.

The Promenade Shops at Briargate has become yet another great Colorado Springs destination.
