A Beautiful Balance:: Three Reasons To Try Whole Living Pilates

3

I may be alone here, but after pregnancy, it took (and is still taking!) much effort to see (or feel) my waist again. Crunches. Planks. Diets. The latest, greatest workout class. If you are a mom who has wanted to see her abs again, likely you can put a check mark next to each item I just listed.

I have tried many methods to regain my pre-baby body, however, I honestly never even considered Pilates. I would frequently watch Pilates classes at my old gym through the window, and it just didn’t look like it was an intense workout. How could holding several moves on a mat really get my body back? I just didn’t see it. Until last week. I experienced my first Pilates class at Whole Living Pilates, a new boutique Pilates studio in Colorado Springs.

I’m certain every muscle in my body was tired after I finished my private session with the owner Nicole. It was not high intensity, but I was sweating (how is that possible?). My legs were shaking, my arms felt like noodles, and my abs were fatigued. I did not do a single crunch and my core felt exhausted. Huh. There might be something to this Pilates method. In fact, I think there is a lot of merit to Pilates.

Three reasons to try Whole Living Pilates

Whole body. It sounds good, right? Most people in my circle of influence are health conscious enough to want to take care of and improve their body. The benefits of Pilates are numerous, and they far outweigh the benefit of re-shaping your mom bod:

  • Improved core strength
  • Better posture, balance, and flexibility
  • Increased back strength
  • Improved balanced musculature for efficient movement
  • More energy and endurance for day-to-day life
The equipment at Whole Living Pilates is state-of-the-art, and this is the only studio in town to have Pilates apparatus from Pilates Designs by Basil. These apparatus are designed for the most effective workouts, allowing the users to focus on the exercise (and their bodies) and not on the equipment. They are engineered to operate smoothly, quietly, and with the appropriate resistance and geometry to achieve results in the most efficient manner.

Whole mind. Mamas, listen up. You cannot skip this section. This is the most important for those of us who get mere seconds (not even minutes) to ourselves during the day. I was surprised how much my session helped me relax and clear my head. I usually hit a good run if I feel stressed or have a lot on my mind. During my time with Nicole, I noticed that I had to focus so intensely on the movements of my body that I let go of the tension from my day. I am certain the more I practiced Pilates, the more I would let go. It felt incredible to focus on me for an hour instead of who needs to do homework, which dose of medicine is up for the raging ear infection my little guy has, or how many poopy bottoms I had to wipe that day. (I hope someone is with me on this!)

Whole spirit. Mothering requires a steadfast and healthy spirit. This is not easy. Every single day brings many moments that can exhaust my spirit and many moments that fill my spirit. I doubt I speak for myself in sharing I want to thrive in motherhood, not just survive. Whole Living Pilates creates an atmosphere to care for your spirit. A beautiful, modern studio that is unlike any other in the area. It is peaceful, quiet and tranquil. The class sizes are small, and Nicole and her staff are focused on helping you transform your body and strengthen your soul.

Tonya
Tonya grew up in Iowa and attended the University of Northern Iowa, where she majored in Health Promotion (the degree you choose when you know are meant to make an impact but you don’t know exactly how) After graduating in 2003, her adventurous spirit lead her to pack up her little car and move to Colorado Springs. Her heart was easily won by the beautiful landscape, the amazing weather, colorful Aspen trees, and the fabulous people in this city. In 2008, she married her love and best friend, Ryan. They added two amazing boys to the family…Landon (2009) and Kellan (2011). After a rewarding career as a Director for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and a sales representative for Pfizer, her heart desired more time with her boys. In 2011, she became a work from home mom, focusing on her very busy boys full time and her health and wellness coaching business part time! Her passion as a mom includes building legos, trips to the zoo, family hikes, fishing, and camping. Her passion as a health coach is helping people see their potential, reach goals, and lead a healthy lifestyle. In her spare time (what is that again??), she loves working out, running, and reading. Her favorite things to do with her handsome hubby include riding bikes downtown Colorado Springs for date nights, hiking the incline, trying new (exotic) foods, spending time with great (adult) friends, and trying craft beers (inspired of course by her husband!).

  1. I think it is wonderful that you have started taking Pilates and see how it truly helps you get back into shape post pregnancy. It is a wonderful method.

I do feel it necessary to mention one thing regarding the Pilates apparatus. You mentioned that the above studio is the only studio in Colorado Springs that uses authentic Pilates apparatus. Id like to clarify that most if not all Pilates studios in Colorado Springs use “authentic” Pilates apparatus which is necessary for the execution Pilates exercises safely and to also withstand repeated use by customers.

    • Hi Trish,
Thank you for your comment. I appreciate your opinion, and I will update the post to reflect this change, as I understand how my phrase could be misleading.

My understanding is Whole Living Pilates is the only studio in town with Pilates apparatus from Pilates Designs by Basil. The equipment is different but it doesn’t mean that other Reformers are ineffective. Owner, Nicole Fields, shared with me that she personally has noticed a huge change in my strength since working on this equipment.

      I appreciate your input!

  2. Thank you.

Pilates Designs by Basil is one of many Pilates equipment manufacturers including Balanced Body, Peak Pilates and Stott to name but a few. These manufacturers also engineer state-of-the-art Pilates equipment to operate smoothly, efficiently and effectively so that the best results can be achieved.
