Bootastically Healthy and Easy Halloween Treats

0

Amongst other things, (like National Fire Prevention Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month), October is National Dessert Month AND National Cookie Month. Can I just say dessert is my favorite meal of the day?

But seriously, I am about to break your heart because I am giving you some ideas for HEALTHY treats and desserts.

Halloween has to be one of my kiddos favorite holidays. I try my best to make it a fun time for my girls, but keep it healthy. The amount of sugar that gets consumed up until and on holidays is just unbelievable. I like to tone it down and keep it fairly light on the sugar, so I thought I would share some healthy treat ideas for your kiddos (and yourself) for Halloween.

If you’re an apple pie lover, try this recipe instead:

Apple Confit  (with homemade vegan whipped cream)

Makes: 8 servings, about 1/2 cup each

Active Time: 15 minutes

Total Time: 2 1/4-4 3/4 hours

INGREDIENTS

  • 3 lbs firm apples, such as Granny Smith, Rome or Golden Delicious
  • 1/4 C sugar (I would go with organic)
  • 1/4-1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

PREPARATION

  • Peel and slice apples 1/4 inch thick. (about 9 cups.) Place apples in a 4-quart or larger slow cooker. Add sugar and cinnamon to taste, and toss to coat. Cover and cook until the apples are very tender and almost translucent, but not pureed, 2 to 2 1/2 hours on high or 4 to 4 1/2 hours on low. Stir in vanilla. Transfer to a bowl and let cool slightly. Cover and refrigerate until chilled. Eat warm or cold and top with some whipped cream! Delicious!

monster apple faceApple Monster Faces

While we are on the subject of apples, (since mine don’t like “squishy” apples) make your kids some Apple Monster Faces with all natural peanut butter. I let my kiddo cut a large marshmallow to make long fangs on this one! Super fun and healthy.

Vanilla Greek Yogurt Dip

Greek yogurtHere’s an easy one with LOTS of options. Take some vanilla greek yogurt and add in a mix of your favorite nut butter. Toss in some Halloween sprinkles, (I’m sure you can get more creative than my plain orange sprinkles) or mini chocolate chips and mix! Super easy right? Eat it with apples, graham crackers, maybe an oreo, or a spoon! So good!

popcornMonster Popcorn and Fingers

Ok, so this isn’t totally original, but my kids don’t care! This popcorn is not full of corn syrup or chemicals. Ditch the bagged popcorn and make this at home, pronto!

  1. Melt some coconut oil in a large pot on medium heat. Enough to cover the bottom.
  2. Add your corn kernels (yellow or white) so there is one even layer on the bottom.
  3. Cover and cook until you don’t hear anymore popping noise! (it might take a few trys to get it right) Boom!!!! I even added some green sprinkles to mine 🙂
  4. Serve with grapes on a stick and there you have it! “Monster popcorn and monster fingers”

mummy pop

Mummy Banana Pops

SO EASY and fun for your kids to help out. Simply pop half of a banana on a skewer and let your kids drizzle some all natural PB over it. Stick some raisins on it for the eyes and you have yourself a mummy banana pop. Seriously. So. Easy.

And lastly, I know there are some pumpkin lovers out there, so this is for you! I can’t wait to make this.

No Bake Pumpkin Pie

INGREDIENTS

  • 15 oz pureed pumpkin (or 1 can)
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1-2 tsp cocoa powder
  • level 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 cup chocolate chips
  • sweetener of choice, to taste

INSTRUCTIONS

Melt the chocolate (either on the stove or in the microwave), then throw everything into a food processor and blend until it is super smooth. Pour into a pie crust and fridge until chilled. This pie gets firmer the longer it sits.

I hope you like the healthy versions of my treats and desserts! Let me know if you try any and what you think!
