This month sees summer winding down and school starting for kids across Colorado Springs. August 1: Free Movie Tuesday | 10am and 12:45pm Come join us at the Focus on the Family Welcome Center for the movie Tangled at 10am and 12:45pm in the Welcome Center Theater. Complimentary popcorn, water or juice! (while they last) FREE

August 2: Messy Art at the Manitou Library | 10:30-11:30am Messy Art is all about providing children with the opportunity to experience open-ended, creative exploration of art away from home. We will encourage children to get messy and focus on the process of creation rather than the final product. Please dress your child and yourself appropriately. Most materials will be washable, but be prepared to get dirty! FREE, but registration is required.

August 2: Wednesday Night Movie: Beauty and the Beast | 5-8pm Join the Sand Creek Library every Wednesday night for a free film. Rated PG. 129 min. Refreshments served. FREE

August 3: Playful Yoga for Kids and Caregivers | 10-10:30am Yoga instructor Leigh Spector will take participants through a non-heated yoga class emphasizing basic poses and yoga flow, accompanied by gentle music. Moms, dads, grandparents, and other caregivers will practice yoga with children from newborns to age 8. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel and small pillows; poses can be done by an adult wearing a baby in a sling. All experience levels welcome (beginners through advanced). Registration required for each attendee. FREE

August 3: Combined Elementary MAKE & Tween Twist Thursday: Decorate a folder | 4:30-5:15pm It’s back to school time! Drop by the children’s department to decorate a folder with your own personal style. This special combined Elementary MAKE & Tween Twist Thursday program is for ages 5-12. FREE

August 4: First Friday Shuttle Bus | 5-8pm The entire shuttle bus loop takes one hour. Shuttle buses pick up at each stop approximately every 30 minutes. The shuttle runs from 4:30 to 10:00 p.m. to allow participants to enjoy local dining options. *Gallery Openings * Live Demonstrations * Meet the Artists * Shopping and Dining * Special Performances* FREE

August 5: First Saturday Car Show | 8-10am The First & Main First Saturdays Car Show is in it’s 8th year of operation and runs every first Saturday from May to October. The car show centers around bringing people of Colorado Springs together in a historic, fun-filled, family friendly environment. The event is hosted in the plaza adjacent to Panera Bread in the First & Main Town Center on Cinema Point. FREE

August 5: Prairie Dogs | 9-10:30am Prairie dogs are an indicator species of a healthy environment and they’re so doggone cute! We’ll explore the community of the dogs through an interactive PowerPoint presentation, make a craft, then caravan to a nearby dog town to view them. Reservations required by phone or on-line. $3 per member, $4 per nonmember

August 5: Michael’s Kids Club | 10am-12pm They make a Sprout® Pencil Topper, you shop! $2 per child

August 5: Rock Painting at High Prairie Library | 1:30-4:30pm  Come by this open studio event to paint a rock or two as part of the Kindness Project. FREE

August 7: LEGO Lab Mondays at the ERC | 3-6pm Stop in anytime during open hours at the Educational Resource Center on Mondays in August (3-6 p.m.) to build with our amazing collection of LEGOs and let your imagination run wild! Ages 5 and up. FREE

August 8: Library Lawn Concert | 6-7:30pJoin the Manitou Springs Library for an outdoor concert featuring Bluegrass music from Out of Nowhere. All concerts are free and open to the public. Bring a picnic supper, blanket, lawn chairs and enjoy an evening of music on the lawn! In case of bad weather, concerts will be canceled. FREE

August 10: Nature Adventures: Lovely Ladybugs | 9-10:30am Children ages 3-6, with an adult, will enjoy puppet shows or stories, crafts, hands-on activities, and discovery time on the trail. Reservations required by phone or on-line. $3/person including adults and siblings.

August 11: Night Sky Program:”What’s up Tonight and Native American Skies” | 7:30-9:30pm Join Bruce Bookout and the astronomers from the Pikes Peak Astronomical Society to discover what’s in the night sky along with correlating Native American star stories! Reservations required by phone or on-line. $4 per member, $5 per nonmember

August 12: Joule Studio: Spin at the Tower | 9-10am Join Athlete for a pop-up spin class with the awesome instructors from Joule Studio! Bikes will be set up at the south west corner of the mall at the tower. Space will be limited; be sure you and your workout buddies RSVP! FREE

August 12: Storytime with Puppets | 10-11am Join a naturalist for special animal stories with a guest puppet too! Then enjoy the trails of Fountain Creek Nature Center on your own. FREE

August 12: Michael’s Kids Club | 10am-12pm They make a Kawaii Backpack Tag, you shop! $2 per child

August 12: Baby and Me Yoga at Library 21c | 10:30-11:30am Our instructor, Merissa, is a certified Hatha Yoga teacher. She currently teaches at Villa Sports and is a private Yoga Nourishment Health Coach. For mothers/caregivers and their infants 12 months and younger. Available to the first 20 registrants. Our apologies, but we are not able to accommodate children older than 12 months at this program. The class will be one hour, and please bring a towel or yoga mat. FREE, pre-registration required.

August 12: Walking Tour of Old Colorado City| 10:30-11:30am Join library staff for a free 45 minute walking tour of historic Old Colorado City. No registration necessary, but groups should call ahead. Please come prepared for weather–sunny or cool accordingly. In case of rain, a slideshow will be presented in the library meeting room. August 16: Children’s History Hour | 10:30-11:30am Do like to go out to eat? We’ll read about Froggy and his family’s special trip out to a fancy resturaunt. There are many delicious places to enjoy a meal in town. Let’s explore the story of one of the oldest family restaurants in Colorado Springs, Vallejo’s Restaurant. We’ll also prepare and taste our own scrumptious salsa! *We’ll have all the makings of salsa, including corn tortilla chips, at this event. Please consider any food allergies before attending. Please call with any questions or concerns. Suggested for ages 2-7 FREE

August 17: Twos and Threes Outdoors: Wiggly Worms | 9-10:15m Discover the world of nature with your two or three year-old. Interactive activities and a short hike make this the perfect introduction to the outdoors for your child. For 2-3 year old toddlers accompanied by an adult. $3/person including adults and siblings.

August 18: Museum Free Day | 10am-4pm Museum Free Days are just that, an opportunity for the public to enjoy our galleries free of charge. Museum Free Days are offered the third Friday of each month with hands-on art activities from 10a to 2p in the Smith Family Gallery. FREE

August 19: Gearing Up for Mental Health|9:30am-12:30pm Gearing up for Mental Health: Colorado Springs, aims to raise awareness and destigmatize mental health. Event Timeline:

9:30 AM: We’ll be decorating our bikes to bring visibility to the cause!
10:00 AM: Short Bike Ride/Walk. For those who cannot bike, we’ll have a group of us walking. Families and kids are welcome!
10:45 AM: Mental Wellness Fair- Nonprofits and mental health organizations will be tabling and providing resources for the community. We’ll have FREE lunch and family-friendly activities (including a face painter and smoothie-making bike!)FREE

August 19: Teddy Bear Days at the Zoo|9am-4pm Who’s ready for a “beary” fun time at the Zoo? You won’t want to miss our 29th annual Teddy Bear Day! All stuffed animals will receive a complete check-up and official certificate of health. Stitches, splints and other “medical” procedures will also be administered to sick and injured stuffed animals. Come have a BEARiffic day at the Zoo! Children 3-11 years old visiting the Zoo along with a teddy bear, or their favorite stuffed animal or doll, will receive discounted admission of $9.75 (saving $10!). Children ages two and under are just 75¢ and members are FREE.

August 19: Fountain Creek Letterbox Hunt | 9-11am Join us for Letterboxing—an outdoor family activity similar to geocaching in which you make stamps, follow clues, and find hidden caches while hiking and enjoying the park. It’s an intro, stamp making workshop, and investigation all rolled into one! Great for all ages. Reservations required by phone or on-line. $4 per member, $5 per nonmember

August 19: National Honeybee Day Celebration | 9-10:30am Ever wonder how honeybees talk to each other? Learn the waggle dance and talk just like a honeybee! Then, observe a real bee hive, make your own bee craft, discuss how bees are important to us and take home some bee-friendly plant seeds! Reservations required by phone or on-line. $3 per member, $4 per nonmember

August 19: Great American Eclipse Family Activities | 10am-2pm Stop by The Colorado Springs Pioneer Museum for a drop-in craft and activity to learn more about the upcoming August 21 “Great American Eclipse.” FREE

August 19: Kids Zone at the Money Museum | 10:30am-12pm(ages 4-7), 1:30-3pm(ages 8-12) Did you know you can find real treasures in your own pocket? We’ll show you how to unlock this potential by searching through bank-wrapped rolls of circulated US cents. You’ll learn how to become a “coin hunter” and how to decide which coins are collectible or not. Free for children 12 and under. When kids participate in a KidsZone class, their parents are allowed to view and explore the Money Museum exhibits for free!

August 19: Pikes Peak Regional History Lecture | 2-3pm The upcoming total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 is being called the Great American Eclipse. But it is not the first eclipse to deserve that title. In the summer of 1878, when the American West was still wild, hundreds of astronomers and thousands of tourists traveled by train to Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas to witness America’s first “Great Eclipse.” Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak played an important role in that eclipse, an event that changed the direction of American astronomy. Steve Ruskin is an award-winning historian of astronomy, with a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Notre Dame. He is the author of two books and over fifty articles, chapters, and reviews. He was a visiting researcher at Cambridge University, England, on a grant from the National Science Foundation. He is on the Board of Advisors for the NSS&TI $5 suggested donation, free for Museum Members

August 19: Brownies and Board Games | 4-5pm Come to the High Prairie Library and challenge your family or some friends to a couple of rounds of your favorite game. We’ll supply the board games and the treats, you bring the competition! All age levels and skill levels are welcome. FREE

August 25: Quidditch on the Library Lawn | 3-4pm Muggles rejoice — we can play quidditch too! Team up with fellow muggles to gain bragging rights and the house trophy. I solemnly swear you’ll have a good time! FREE

August 25-27: Colorado Springs Comic Con | Times Vary Colorado Springs Comic Con will be a weekend-long event held at the Colorado Springs Event Center. In addition to the unique vendors and photo ops, there will special events held each day. Sci-Fi Speed Dating, Ink Fusion Tattooing, Kids Con, and Cosplay Costume Contest are all apart of the fun! Ticket prices vary

August 26: McAllister House Museum Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social11am-2pm  The McAllister House Museum’s Annual Old-Fashioned Ice Cream Social is here! Join the museum for a day of family-friendly fun on the beautiful lawn. There will be five cent ice cream and one dollar hot dogs as well as free music, antique cars, a yard sale, and much more. Take a tour of the beautiful McAllister House Museum and learn about family life in the early days of Colorado Springs! FREE

August 30: Family Star Party | 8-10pm With longer hours of summer sunlight, we have moved the time for our Family Star Party. Join us later in the evening to enjoy the dark night sky. Bring your family and friends and explore the universe with us on a beautiful summer evening. We hope to inspire new astronomy enthusiasts – young and old! All outside activities are free to the public. Special Event Discount! Enjoy a discounted admission to also explore the Discovery Center and Science On a Sphere® inside.

August 31: Tails, Tunes & Tastes | 6-9:30pm Experience Cheyenne Mountain Zoo like never before – at an after-hours, adults-only event – Tails, Tunes & Tastes! Enjoy an evening under the stars with four stages of live music entertainment, as well as all-inclusive food and drinks by Taste, the Zoo’s onsite caterer. Also, you’ll experience a true Zoo experience, with many animal exhibits open 6-8 p.m. $45.75($50.75 day of event)

August 30,31: Little Wonders: Burly Bears | 9-10:15am Discover the world of nature with your two or three year-old. Interactive activities and a short hike make this the perfect introduction to the outdoors for your child. For 2-3 year old toddlers accompanied by an adult. $3/person including adults and siblings.

August 30: Family Star Party | 8-10pm With longer hours of summer sunlight, we have moved the time for our Family Star Party. Join us later in the evening to enjoy the dark night sky. Bring your family and friends and explore the universe with us on a beautiful summer evening. We hope to inspire new astronomy enthusiasts – young and old! All outside activities are free to the public. Special Event Discount! August 2: Messy Art at the Manitou Library | 10:30-11:30am Messy Art is all about providing children with the opportunity to experience open-ended, creative exploration of art away from home. We will encourage children to get messy and focus on the process of creation rather than the final product. Please dress your child and yourself appropriately. August 3: Playful Yoga for Kids and Caregivers | 10-10:30am Yoga instructor Leigh Spector will take participants through a non-heated yoga class emphasizing basic poses and yoga flow, accompanied by gentle music. Moms, dads, grandparents, and other caregivers will practice yoga with children from newborns to age 8. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel and small pillows; poses can be done by an adult wearing a baby in a sling. All experience levels welcome (beginners through advanced). Registration required for each attendee. FREE

August 12: Baby and Me Yoga at Library 21c | 10:30-11:30am Our instructor, Merissa, is a certified Hatha Yoga teacher. She currently teaches at Villa Sports and is a private Yoga Nourishment Health Coach. For mothers/caregivers and their infants 12 months and younger. Available to the first 20 registrants. Our apologies, but we are not able to accommodate children older than 12 months at this program. The class will be one hour, and please bring a towel or yoga mat. FREE, pre-registration required.

August 18: Museum Free Day | 10am-4pm Museum Free Days are just that, an opportunity for the public to enjoy our galleries free of charge. Museum Free Days are offered the third Friday of each month with hands-on art activities from 10a to 2p in the Smith Family Gallery. FREE

August 19: Kids Zone at the Money Museum | 10:30am-12pm(ages 4-7), 1:30-3pm(ages 8-12) Did you know you can find real treasures in your own pocket? We’ll show you how to unlock this potential by searching through bank-wrapped rolls of circulated US cents. You’ll learn how to become a “coin hunter” and how to decide which coins are collectible or not. Free for children 12 and under. When kids participate in a KidsZone class, their parents are allowed to view and explore the Money Museum exhibits for free!

August 19: Pikes Peak Regional History Lecture | 2-3pm The upcoming total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 is being called the Great American Eclipse. But it is not the first eclipse to deserve that title. In the summer of 1878, when the American West was still wild, hundreds of astronomers and thousands of tourists traveled by train to Colorado, Wyoming, and Texas to witness America’s first “Great Eclipse.” Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak played an important role in that eclipse, an event that changed the direction of American astronomy. Steve Ruskin is an award-winning historian of astronomy, with a PhD in History and Philosophy of Science from the University of Notre Dame. He is the author of two books and over fifty articles, chapters, and reviews. He was a visiting researcher at Cambridge University, England, on a grant from the National Science Foundation. He is on the Board of Advisors for the NSS&TI $5 suggested donation, free for Museum Members
 
August 25-27: Colorado Springs Comic Con | Times Vary Colorado Springs Comic Con will be a weekend-long event held at the Colorado Springs Event Center. In addition to the unique vendors and photo ops, there will special events held each day. Sci-Fi Speed Dating, Ink Fusion Tattooing, Kids Con, and Cosplay Costume Contest are all apart of the fun! Ticket prices vary
 
August 31: Tails, Tunes & Tastes | 6-9:30pm Experience Cheyenne Mountain Zoo like never before – at an after-hours, adults-only event – Tails, Tunes & Tastes! Enjoy an evening under the stars with four stages of live music entertainment, as well as all-inclusive food and drinks by Taste, the Zoo’s onsite caterer. Also, you’ll experience a true Zoo experience, with many animal exhibits open 6-8 p.m. $45.75($50.75 day of event)
