Helpful Remedies for the Cold and Cough Season

hylands-remedyI always rejoice when school is back in session and fall is here. I love getting back into a great routine (even though summer is dreamy!), and I love the cooler weather, the beautiful colors, and pulling out sweaters and jeans. What I don’t love are the inevitable cold and cough germs that get passed around at school, the gym, and church. As a very busy mom with a whole household to keep healthy, I’m always looking for helpful remedies for the cold and cough season.

We try a lot of methods to prevent the spread of germs. It can feel like an uphill battle with kids though. They touch so many objects and each other. They are in close quarters with classmates who might be coughing and sneezing, or even spreading germs before symptoms appear.

Our tips for preventing colds and sickness

  • Stay hydrated!  We try to keep fluids available throughout the day. Most kids do not get enough water.
  • Probiotics : Find a great probiotic for children. Immune systems are largely connected to the intestinal tract. Our kids have been sick a lot less often when we care consistent with a quality probiotic.
  • Always wash hands (or second best – use hand sanitizer) when arriving at and leaving school, daycare, the gym, etc.
  • Eat as healthy as possible. Fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as great sources of protein and carbohydrates will help boost your child’s immune system.
  • Get plenty of sleep. We always strive to keep our boys on a consistent bedtime routine. We put them to bed 15-30 minutes earlier when we feel like they are run down.

Knock on wood — these tips have helped keep our family fairly free from colds and coughs. But, no matter what, we typically endure one or two rounds of the nasty bugs each season. We have always tried to give our kids the most natural remedies available to avoid adding unnecessary medicines to their little bodies. We choose Hyland’s as a safe, effective, homeopathic medicine.

Why We Choose Hyland’s

For our family, it is also important that this product is alcohol free, sugar free, and dye free.

Not many cold and cough remedies are available for the toddler age. This formula is designed for kids 2 years old and up. Hyland’s developed this medicine to help kids get the rest they need to heal from colds and coughs.

Hyland’s Homeopathy is the oldest manufacturer of homeopathic medicines in the US. They use the highest quality natural ingredients and in accordance with FDA Good Manufacturing Practices. They have always been driven by the simple scientific proof of how the body can call upon its own natural defenses to heal and restore balance. Today, as countless conventional medicines developed by others prove to produce complicated or even harmful side effects, the need for natural homeopathic medicines that work without side effects is increasing.

Tonya
Tonya grew up in Iowa and attended the University of Northern Iowa, where she majored in Health Promotion (the degree you choose when you know are meant to make an impact but you don’t know exactly how) After graduating in 2003, her adventurous spirit lead her to pack up her little car and move to Colorado Springs. Her heart was easily won by the beautiful landscape, the amazing weather, colorful Aspen trees, and the fabulous people in this city. In 2008, she married her love and best friend, Ryan. They added two amazing boys to the family…Landon (2009) and Kellan (2011). After a rewarding career as a Director for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and a sales representative for Pfizer, her heart desired more time with her boys. In 2011, she became a work from home mom, focusing on her very busy boys full time and her health and wellness coaching business part time! Her passion as a mom includes building legos, trips to the zoo, family hikes, fishing, and camping. Her passion as a health coach is helping people see their potential, reach goals, and lead a healthy lifestyle. In her spare time (what is that again??), she loves working out, running, and reading. Her favorite things to do with her handsome hubby include riding bikes downtown Colorado Springs for date nights, hiking the incline, trying new (exotic) foods, spending time with great (adult) friends, and trying craft beers (inspired of course by her husband!).
