A Mom’s Guide to January in Colorado Springs

This Guide to January is brought to you by our partners at First & Main Town Center, but all thoughts and opinions are our own. We partner with businesses we know and love.

Mamas, can you believe that 2018 is actually here? Let’s start it off right with lots of family-friendly activities. There is so much going on it is hard to choose! Events in this guide are organized by date as well as category to help you find what you are interested in quickly. If you know of any fun family activities, please take a minute to add it to our Community Events Calendar here or let us know in the comments. We will update this guide with new additions as we receive them. Thank you!

January 1: Electric Safari | 5-8pm There’s only one place in Colorado Springs that you can see over 85 one-of-a-kind light sculptures and 50 acres of lights and wild animals – Cheyenne Mountain Zoo’s Electric Safari! Come celebrate the holiday season with twinkling lights, animal experiences and family fun! For ticket prices and  details, visit: http://www.cmzoo.org/electricsafari

January 2: Kids’ Movie: Despicable Me 3 | 2-4pm School’s out so come on down, get cozy on a bean bag and watch a new movie. Afterwards, make a craft to take home. We’ll provide the popcorn but don’t forget your water bottle! January 2: Despicable Me 3. Rated PG. 90 minutes. FREE

January 3: Snuggle Up Storytime | 7-7:30pm An evening storytime for ages 3 and up. Come in your pajamas and bring a favorite cuddly! FREE

January 4: Nature Adventures: Mighty Eagles | 10-11:30am Children, ages 3-6 with an adult, will enjoy hands-on activities, puppet shows or stories, crafts, and a hike. Prepaid reservations required on-line or phone, limit 24 participants. $3 per participant, including adults and siblings.

January 4: Free Flow Kiddo Yoga | 10-10:40am Free Flow Kiddo Yoga, taught by local Yoga Instructor Leigh Spector, offers routines that provide movement, silly play, and dance. Kids, parents, and caregivers can move together with the poses, make silly noises, and dance freely during the class. This class is designed for children infant to age 8. Please bring along a pillow or two and a yoga mat. Those with infants are welcomed to bring a “boppy” or breast-feeding pillow and can wear their infant in a sling for most of the poses. All experience levels welcome (beginners through advanced). FREE

January 4: Elementary S.A.L.T. | 4-5pm  5 to 12 year olds are invited to come explore S.A.L.T. (Science, Art, Literature, and Technology) through a variety of hands-on activities. FREE

January 6: Saturday Morning Hike and Campfire | 10-11:30am Start the new year off right by joining us for a short winter hike, followed by a campfire, songs, stories, and of course s’mores! Prepaid reservations required on-line or phone. $3-4

January 6: Michaels Kids Club | 10am-12pm They make a Snowman Canvas, you shop! $2 per child

January 11: 2’s & 3’s Outdoors: Silly Squirrels | 10-11:30am Share the joy of your 2 or 3 year-old child’s discovery as he or she enjoys a story and an exploration hike outdoors. Prepaid reservations required on-line or phone. Limit 24 participants. $3 per participant, including adults and siblings

January 12: Kids’ Winter-iffic Night Out | 5:30-9pm Drop your kids off at Bear Creek for an evening of nature exploring and activities including a winter hike and campfire. Dinner provided! Grades 1-5. Prepaid registration required on-line or phone. $10-15

January 12: Kids Night Out: Trolls | 5:30-8:30pm What’s more fun than Trolls??! Kids will be able to choose either a Poppy canvas, or a Guy Diamond one! We will also have ice cream and popcorn for snacks. As a special treat,  DreamWorks is sending us 3 episodes of the new Trolls cartoon that haven’t been shown on air yet! We will watch the exclusive episodes on our big screen TV. Ages 6-13 recommended. Call the studio 265-1737 to reserve your child’s spot now! $25

January 13: Winter Woodland Wonders Walk at Fox Run | 10am-12pm We will explore the trails at Fox Run Regional Park to discover winter happenings such as tracks and other wildlife signs. Who lives here in the winter and how do they survive? All ages welcome. Prepaid registration required on-line or phone. $3-4

January 13: Museum Free Day | 10am-7pm Museum Free Days are just that, an opportunity for the public to enjoy our galleries at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center free of charge. FREE

January 13: Michaels Kids Club | 10am-12pm They make a Snowman Page Marker, you shop! $2 per child

January 18: Free French Class for Kids | 10-10:45am Join Barbara Mills from Springs French Music Lingua for a unique program that teaches French to children, ages 8 and under, using a fun mix of music, movement, art, drama and storytelling. Register for the FREE French class at the 21C Library Children’s Information Desk by calling 719-884-9800 x6310 FREE

January 19: Acoustic Friday | 8-10pm In addition to live music, you will be treated to a tiny studio fee & complementary wine! Your minimum pottery purchase of $15 will be paid in advance to hold your reservation. Feel free to upgrade your item at the event! Your studio fee will be only $1.00! If drinking wine from a box isn’t your thing, feel free to BYOB during any of our wine night events. We will be partying on after the mall closes, so make sure you are in the building before 9pm.$15

January 19: Museum Free Day | 10am-7pm Museum Free Days are just that, an opportunity for the public to enjoy our galleries at the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center free of charge. FREE

January 20: Money Museum Kids Zone | 10:30am, 1:30pm Humans have been using metals as money for over 2,600 years. Today, we’ll explore the ANA’s Periodic Table of Numismatic Elements, and decide which of these 118 known elements are good or bad for making coinage. FREE

January 20: Wave Pool Reopening | 11:30am-5:30pm We are excited to announce that our wave pool is back up and running! Come join us for a day of swimming, pool games, prizes, and more! We’re offering half-price day passes for the public: Youth $4, Adults $5, Families $16! YMCA members are free.

 January 21: Pop Up Yoga at the Fine Art Center | 10am We are excited to offer another pop-up yoga class amidst the breathtaking animated exhibition by Jennifer Steinkamp. Enjoy live music by cellist Lisa Schoenstein. Please bring your yoga mat, any props you might want to have on hand, and let’s breathe with the seasons and experience the FAC in a whole new light! Space available on a first-come-first-served basis. This class is donation-based and included with museum admission.

We will have fun with yoga, crafts and library books! Special: When you attend, purchase any beverage and receive a free gorilla bread! Plus enjoy extended Coffee Happy Hour. FREE

 

City Rock CLIMBarium Open Gym | Monday-Friday from 11am-1pm This open gym time is for children 5 and under. $6 per child (18 months and under free with paid sibling). 21 N Nevada Ave, Colorado Springs

Music and Movement for Two and Three Year Olds | Mondays 10-10:30am (Rockrimmon Library), Tuesdays 10:30-11am (Cheyenne Mountain Library), Wednesdays 9:30-10am, 10:15-10:45am, 11-11:30am (Library 21c), Fridays 10:30-11am (Penrose Library & Ruth Holley Library) Shake those wiggles out and have some fun! This 30-minute program consists of music and movement activities and a story. For two and three-year-old children, with a favorite adult. Due to high attendance, certain branches issue a token to the first 20 FAMILIES, on a first come, first served basis. FREE

Story Time Yoga| Tuesdays at 9:30am Bring your children for a story followed by 30 minutes of mindful movement and breathing that follow themes of the story. $10, $5 each additional child
