Bringing People Together for Soup Sunday

1

The idea of “Soup Sunday” all started with a Sunday and one lone bowl of hot soup and the thought that we all could use a little more comfort, warmth and connection in our lives.

Cozying up by the fire, warming my back, with a bowl in hand, I schemed up an idea in my head of bringing people together to connect over soup.

After all, it is one of those things that evokes the same feeling in all of us – comfort and warmth.

When the kids were younger, we had people over all the time.  Yet, here I sat, by myself, eating a bowl of soup with everyone in the house scattered about doing their own thing.  What happened to those times?

How Time Slips By

Nowadays, I need every possible excuse not only to clean, but also to find the time to have friends over. It has become a bit of a lost concept for us to have friends over as our lives have gotten busier throughout the years.  Time slips by and life seems a bit easier when we put little to no extra effort in to invite people over.

But without fail, days turn into weeks and weeks into months and an uneasy feeling creeps in.  I realize how much I miss the connection and time with friends. But I’ve done nothing about it.

In that moment, I decided no more letting time slip by. It was time to step up and be intentional about connecting with friends.

An Idea for Gathering

Thus, the creation of “Soup Sunday” – a gathering of friendship and fun, all shared over a big pot of soup.

You can’t go wrong with this particular food.  It is super easy, economical and feeds an army.  Nevermind the fact that it oozes comfort.  Even if you don’t feel like making your own, there is always store-bought and 9 times out of 10, there are leftovers for later in the week.  I call that a win-win.

How to Make It Happen

Soup Sunday is simple.

  • An invite goes out. First Sunday of every month.  Be here anytime between noon and 2.
  • Prep begins a couple of hours before guests arrive.
  • Soup warms on the stove.
  • Set out bread, bowls, and utensils.
  • Voila, that’s all there is to it.

It really is that easy and results in a laid back, casual, no fuss get together.

To simplify things even more, we don’t ask anyone to bring anything other than themselves.  Most people are relieved to not have another thing on their to-do list. They walk in with a sort of a relaxed swagger and grin on their face—just happy and grateful to take part and be taken care of for a couple of hours.

A simple tradition born out of a desire to gather and connect that brings such joy to our lives.

My hope in sharing is that it sparks something in you to create a monthly gathering tradition of your own.  Now, who is up for some soup making?!
