Target, Sweet Target: An Ode to Solo-Mama Shopping

0

Being a stay-at-home mom to a pair of boys aged 3 and 2, it’s easy to find things in which I can take solace. Like shopping.

Going Solo

For me, sometimes that solace takes form in a leisurely stroll around Target. I can take time to peruse the ‘dollar spot’ without one child pulling down something breakable. Or another begging for a bottle of bubbles, immediately opening it and spilling the gooey contents on the floor.

Let’s be honest, I don’t know a mom who doesn’t love herself some solo time shopping. It could be anywhere, really—the mall, Michaels, Walmart, boutiques, Ross, Bed, Bath & Beyond. I simply happen to spend my scarce free time at the mama-mecca known as Target and that had me thinking…

Beautiful mamas, what else happens when you take a mom to Target? Have any of you read the children’s book If You Give a Mouse a Cookie? If not, you might consider it. 😉

Shopping Without Kids

Does she casually sip on her coffee at the in-house Starbucks? Maybe she’ll hit the café for some popcorn she doesn’t have to share with anyone? Will she stroll down whatever aisle she so pleases without having to “dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge” the toy section?

Maybe she’s like me and will take the time to actually (gasp!) try something on in the fitting room just because she can. And just maybe, she’ll do it while sipping that coffee from the in-house Starbucks and nibbling on popcorn that she doesn’t have to share with anyone.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m acutely aware that this, too, shall pass. But I would be lying if  I said I didn’t have to give myself a pep talk before heading into Target or our local grocery store with my littles.

“I’ve got this, I’m going to stand my ground—no more toys or junk we do not need!” I tell myself. That only makes the defeat tougher when my boys walk out with the latest PJ Masks or Paw Patrol toy.

Next Time

But we do what we must to survive. Solidarity mamas.

Next time, however, I’m going to Target or to Hobby Lobby or to my favorite clothing store by myself. Because let’s face it, these days I’m looking for opportunities to do whatever shopping needs to be done—solo.
