I Didn’t Shampoo My Hair for 4 Weeks…

2

… And something amazing happened!

No, I didn’t turn into a hippie. I still shave my arm pits.

I literally did not shampoo or use soap in my hair for 4 weeks, even though my goal was 6 weeks. WHY you ask? Because all my life I have had straight, flat, lifeless hair that has never held a curl! You always want what you can’t have, right? I have ALWAYS wanted curly, thick and luscious hair. Also, let’s be real here, good hair product is expensive and full of chemicals! Not only would I love to cut it out of our budget, but I would like to not wash my hair with harsh and questionable ingredients.

I got to this point where I felt like every time I put any product in my hair, including shampoo and conditioner, it would just weigh it down, and I don’t need that!  This hair…. THIS HAIR is fine, and very thin.

Now some of you sweet readers out there might think I have lovely hair, and I thank you for that. I see thin, flat life-less hair sitting on my head. With it being this way all my life, I was ready for a change.

I had been thinking about going shampoo-less for a while, and I read a blog or two about other brave souls doing the same. I was already only washing my hair twice a week, but the thought of going weeks without it really scared me. I was also worried because I teach fitness classes and enjoy working out. That means I get SWEATY! My goal was for NO shampoo, which eliminates dry shampoo as well. (my go-to after teaching a super sweaty Insanity class)

When I finally took the plunge, here are the steps I took::

Step one: I traded in my current shampoo and conditioner for some vegan, all natural shampoo and conditioner product that I got from thrive market. It didn’t produce any type of lather when I shampooed, but it still made me feel clean.

Step two: After a few weeks of using the vegan shampoo, I just straight up stopped using it. I wanted to see if my husband noticed… he didn’t.

After the first week, I expected my hair to get greasy. Maybe it’s because I live in Colorado that it didn’t happen? Anyway, the first week went by and it was starting to feel rather easy.

However, going into the second week, my hair became a bit hard to brush, so I didn’t fight it, I just tossed it up. I mostly have my hair back anyway, so it wasn’t a big change for me.

Week three was where it got tough. I had to use my daughter’s de-tangler spray for my rats nest that had developed. I only used it once, so I felt like it was ok. I didn’t want to rip my hair out just trying to brush it so I had to suck it up and break my own rules just once. Also, my head started to itch. I think it was starting to get super dry, (thank you Colorado) so I developed some dandruff. I have never had a problem with that in my life, so it was pretty annoying to say the least.

IMG_4281Week four was the same, and I realized that I needed the dryness to stop! I threw in the flag and did an oil treatment for my scalp and all was well in the world.

Moving forward, I am looking into all natural scalp treatments to keep my scalp from getting dry. Otherwise, I will continue to mostly go shampoo free! My hair has more volume then ever and it feels light and bouncy!

If you are thinking about boycotting shampoo, let me know! I would love to hear your story. It might be a different story, based on your hair type, but just know that you are in good company!

XOXO- Jenna

  1. I started having a reaction to conventional shampoo and recently started thinking of other ideas and researching other products to use. I’m now using a chemical free shampoo with the main ingredient being Aloe. I love it. I never read the labels of my body care products and since I’ve started I’ve been shocked about the things that are used in them…no wonder I was having such a reaction!!!!
