The Striped Skirt That Didn’t Get Away

“Pack it up pack it in, let me begin, I came to win, battle me that’s a sin.” Name that song. If you can’t, then we can’t be friends. Not because I am too cool for you but because I am too old. For real though, I did exactly this to my closet a few weeks ago. I packed it ALL UP! I had had enough! Enough of searching through my many, many articles of clothing only to find frustration at the end.  Enough of cramming too many hangers in my closet and enough of creating a huge mess in my room and closet trying to find that one top! By the way, why is it that ONE top I can’t find ANYWHERE and have to wear, I end up finding in plain sight a few days later? I had finally had enough (and so had my husband), so I packed it all up and started over.

Sarah WatermarkSo you might be saying that this sounds all too drastic, and it is. I didn’t end up getting rid of everything but I did take everything out and go through every single item. If I hadn’t worn it in the last 6 months, it was gone. This included those amazing jeans with the tag still on, that were on sale at The Buckle, that I just had to have, but were in my “when I lose the baby weight” size. I let go of the dream and got rid of the jeans. Mommas, I really encourage you to do this if you haven’t already. I feel so free and focused. I sold a lot of my clothes on sites like North Springs Mommas and the rest I will sell to a consignment store or donate to Goodwill.  I can now start fresh, being particular and intentional about my buying. Gone are the days I buy something just because it’s on sale. Now I know what I want and I search stores for that “piece”. Am I spending tons of money? NO! I still bargain shop, I still look for sales, but before I go in a shop or online, I know what I am looking for. This saves so much time and money spent on clothes I will never wear. Here’s a great example:

It’s no secret I have a love for clothes and fashion, but on a budget I have learned that being intentional about shopping is the way to go!! A few months ago I was flipping through a fashion magazine when I saw a photo like this one.  I instantly became obsessed with finding that black and white striped skirt. I knew the possibilities, that it could be dressed up or down and be a timeless piece in my closet. So, after looking high and low for this skirt,  I wandered into a Banana Republic store in Atlanta, Ga and fell in love with the most gorgeous black and white striped pencil skirt with a cool exposed zipper. It was all I wanted, but I just couldn’t swallow the price tag. So the search continued. Recently, while browsing the aisles of TJ Maxx, looking for something completely different, I found the skirt! And it was under $20! Let me tell you, this skirt is comfortable and can be worn with a tank top and sandals or a blazer and heels!
Sarah finalThe point of this story is, pack it all up and start over! If you are frustrated every time you step into your closet, just commit to having a big girl’s closet and take the time to accumulate all the pieces you love. It may take some time, but it will be worth it in the end! Having a handful of pieces you love is better than having a closet full of clothes you never wear. Flip through a magazine and find inspiration! The “hunt” for the piece becomes part of the game! I am still in the process of building my closet back up but when I do, you will be the first to see it in it’s full glory!

  1. Girl, I wish I had too many clothes! Having your problem would be annoying though because then you have to spend that much longer looking for something and less time getting ready. Can I come shopping with you next time you go? ;)you have great style!!! ?

    • It was super annoying to have that many clothes but don’t be fooled, they were not all nice and fashionable. That was part of my problem, clothes from college still! I’d love to go shopping with you anytime!!

      • I have the same problem! Way too many clothes! I can’t let go. If I loved it in college when I bought it, I still love it. But you’re right, it’s probably past time for it to go. Okay, not probably-definitely!
Way to go girl! Because you tackled something that I can’t. Cleaning out the closet!
And, I want to go shopping with you too-you’re rocking that skirt!
