My 4th grader in the read zone

I fell in love with reading at a young age. I always loved reading, but I was in the 4th grade when I truly found myself getting lost in stories and immersing myself in the world of fiction. By the time I was in 6th grade I was sneaking my story books into class and reading them, hidden behind my textbook. I was such a “rebel” back then, it’s a miracle that I made anything out of my life.

So imagine my delight when I found out that my 4th grade son loves to read just as much as I did at that age.  I decided to ask him to make me a list of his favorite books ever read and he came up with a great compilation! He’s into book series and also will get hooked on a certain author and read all their books. So if you are looking for some books for your child to get into, try some of these!

    1. Diary of a Sixth Grade Ninja by Marcus Emerson. There are 10 book in this series. The suggested age range for these books are 9-12 but my son started these much earlier and had no problem following along. My friends daughter is 7 and I think she would absolutely love these books. The author creates a hilarious story line for your kiddo to get lost in. It centers around the 6th grader, Chase Cooper, who keeps a diary to warn other kids on the dangers of becoming a ninja. Out of all the series my son has read, these stand to be his favorite. (PLUS: if you are an Amazon Prime customer, you can rent these for free on your kindle).
    2. Conspiracy 365 by Gabriel Lord. There are 12 books in the original series all named after a month of the year. It is then followed up by a sequel series called Black Ops (Revenge, Malice, Missing, Hunted and Endgame). The suggested grade level for these books is 4th-6th. It’s gripping, suspenseful and intense stories centered around Callum Ormond who is essentially running for his life for 365 days.
    3. Left Behind The Kids by Jerry B. Jenkins and Tim LaHaye. This is a great series for kids based off the same series for adults written by the same authors. There are 40 books in this series!! Yes, that’s right, 40 books. These are really easy reads and can be read and finished in a few days. Suggested age range is 10-14 but again, my son loves these books and I bought the first book for him (for .99 cents at Focus on the Family Bookstore) when he was 8. There are many story lines throughout the 40 books but all are based around the apocalypse.
    4. The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner. This is just a no-brainer y’all. These are the books my boy started off on and truly fell in love with the life stories of fictional characters. There are 19 original classic books that were written by Warner but then many other authors have written over 100 more to add to this amazing series. (PLUS: you can find a great Boxcar Children movie on Netflix which will make kids excited after reading the books) I would suggest these books to anyone that can read!
    5. Tiki and Ronde Barber Books! If you have a sports loving child like I do then these next few series are for you! Tiki and Ronde Barber are identical twins and former NFL players that together wrote 8 children chapter books all based on sports and always with a great overall message in it. This is not a series but all the books are fabulous and include titles By My Brothers Side, Gameday, Teammates, Kickoff, Go Long!, Wild Card, Red Zone, Goal Line and End Zone. Great for ages 9-12.
    6. The Football Genius Series by Tim Green. Again, these books are super fun for your football loving reader and were written by another former NFL player. Suggested for ages 10 and up but again, it’s just a suggestion, you know what your kid can handle. The series starts with The Football Genius and is followed by Football Hero, Football Champ, The Big Time, Deep Zone and Perfect Season. My son found this little gem at the local public library but started with the 4th book not knowing it was a series and still loved it. He’s now getting caught up on the others.
    7. Sports books by Mike Lupica. These books are written by a New York Daily News columnist that is known for his commentary on sports. The stories are so well written and in my opinion as a mother, has some of the best story lines ever. There are FAR too many books to really list here but I will link to the website for you to see all the books he has written for children. My son’s favorite from his books, so far, is Heat. These books are a great fit for ages 8 and up. Go here to check out his books.

A good book and frozen yogurt, doesn’t get much better.

This is a short list of all the amazing books out there for our kids to get lost in. I encourage you to encourage them to get reading! And don’t let them just read a few pages and decide they don’t like it. For the most part, it takes a chapter or two to get hooked. All of these books can be purchased on Amazon among other pages, but we have found many of them at our public library!

What are some favorite books you would add to this list? We would love some new suggestions!
